National Aboriginal Day 2011 Events June 21st, 2011 is the summer solstice AND National Aboriginal Day!!!The National Indian Brotherhood (now the Assembly of First Nations) originally called for the creation of a National Aboriginal Day back in 1982. From these early discussions, June 21st, the summer solstice, was chosen as the date for this celebration because so many Aboriginal cultures and communities already celebrated their culture and heritage on that day. Finally in 1996 June 21st was officially declared National Aboriginal Day by the Governor General at the time, Romeo LeBlanc. Below you will find information on the events that I've run across, but there are probably many more. Check out your local friendship centre, community centre, municipal website or school to see what's happening in your area! All of the events are taking place on Tuesday June 21st unless I've indicated otherwise. Alberta:

Nominate A Youth From Your Community!
Entry Deadline Submission June 30, 2012
 In an effort to highlight Aboriginal youth initiatives and successes, CANDO features a National Youth Panel at our Annual National Conference & AGM. This event features Aboriginal youth who are pursing and speaking their ways of success in areas of education, working within the field of Aboriginal economic development and/or as individual entrepreneurs. Previous youth panelists have been involved in employment and entrepreneurial ventures such as: a sports wear company; fresh water bottling and catering businesses, a Vice President of an Internet company, an artist and writer who owns a comic book publishing company, an Outfitting company, Outdoor garden center craft store owner, Outdoor Adventure Company, Fashion Designer, First Nations Snowboarding Team Coordinator and Aboriginal Diabetes Outreach Program worker to name a few. Each year CANDO selects six Aboriginal youth participants. Once all submissions have been received, the CANDO Board, Conference Committee and CANDO Staff select the youth based upon their strengths, their initiatives, their accomplishments, their entrepreneurial spirit of launching their careers, and their participation within their communities. Successful applicants will be notified no later than two weeks after the nomination deadline. City of Calgary Youth Employment Centrewww.nextsteps.org is the City of Calgary's Youth Employment Centre website. Here you will find tips and workshop info on figuring out the best career path for you, finding a job, getting a job and keeping a job! All the employment and career counselling services at the Youth Employment Centre are FREE for youth between 15 and 24 years old. Free services include use of a fax machine, Employment Counsellors, photocopiers, job boards, Internet and computer access, hiring and career fairs, workshops and their resource area. After School Program Embraces Aboriginal ProgrammingIn this article from Alberta Sweetgrass, Sharon Goulet talks about several different after school programs in Calgary that focus on teaching different elements of Aboriginal culture, from painting and sculpture to ceremonies and teachings with elders. First Nations Natural Resources Youth Employment ProgramMatachewan First Nation is looking for students interested in a summer job as a ranger. As part of the First Nations Natural Resources Youth Employment Program, successful applicants will work for Outland Reforestation Inc in natural resources based training and educational activities six days a week for seven weeks.
